Matthew A. Yanchuk Ceramics
"My inspiration for the work comes from Mimbres pottery of the Southwest and textile design. Over the years they have blended together."

Matthew Yanchuk begins these vibrant works by hand building or throwing the initial form on a potter's wheel. Afterwards, he creates a plaster cast of the piece and re-generates the form by slip casting--filling the mold with liquid clay to produce an incredible smoothness. After removing a vessel from the mold, Yanchuk hand paints it with either a freehand design or by using a wax-resist method.

The shape of the vessel often dictates the various elements of design. Concentric patterns interlaced with color produce striking contrast against the soft, angular edges.
